The two key differences are the antibacterial active system and the formula design. The older Colgate® Total utilized a zinc antibacterial system while the new Colgate® Total Active Prevention utilizes a stannous fluoride-based active system. Both are antibacterial systems. The new stannous based system allows for improved customization of variants to be tailored to specific product benefits improving the consumer experience: including tailoring the foaming level, flavor profile, cooling level and mouthfeel to each specific variant.
Stannous fluoride has been used in toothpaste formulations for over 70 years, is well researched, and its safety profile is equally well understood. Colgate® itself spent more than a decade researching these ingredients and formulations to ensure our products are not only safe, but effective and deliver the benefits our consumers are looking for.
Stannous fluoride is an antibacterial active ingredient that helps fight bacteria that are at the root cause of many common oral care problems. Some of the benefits of this active ingredient as it relates to some of these common oral care conditions are:
Cleanmint Toothpaste: This variant ensures a thorough cleaning with a refreshing taste of peppermint, accentuated with mild hints of cinnamon and clove. It's designed to maintain good oral hygiene by effectively cleaning teeth and freshening breath.
Advanced Whitening Toothpaste: Formulated to help prevent new surface stains and remove existing ones, this toothpaste delivers a fresh, high-impact peppermint flavor with modern cooling sensations. It's suitable for those looking to enhance the natural whiteness of their teeth
Charcoal Deep Clean Toothpaste: Featuring activated charcoal, this toothpaste is geared towards deep cleaning by binding to and removing surface stains and impurities. It offers a mild, creamy fresh peppermint flavor, making the deep cleaning process both effective and pleasant.

You can use mouthwash after brushing and flossing your teeth, usually once or twice a day as part of your oral care routine. Mouthwash helps to freshen breath, reduce plaque, fight bacteria, and reach areas that brushing and flossing might miss. For best results, follow the instructions on your mouthwash bottle, and avoid eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes after use. If you have specific dental concerns, ask your dentist for recommendations on the best time and type of mouthwash for your needs.
