What’s different about the new Colgate® Total toothpaste?

The two key differences are the antibacterial active system and the formula design. The older Colgate^® Total utilized a zinc antibacterial system while the new Colgate^® Total Active Prevention utilizes a stannous fluoride-based active system. Both are antibacterial systems. The new stannous based system allows for improved customization of variants to be tailored to specific product benefits improving the consumer experience: including tailoring the foaming level, flavor profile, cooling level and mouthfeel to each specific variant.
Is Colgate® Total with stannous fluoride safe?

Stannous fluoride has been used in toothpaste formulations for over 70 years, is well researched, and its safety profile is equally well understood. Colgate^® itself spent more than a decade researching these ingredients and formulations to ensure our products are not only safe, but effective and deliver the benefits our consumers are looking for.
What does the stannous fluoride do?
Stannous fluoride is an antibacterial active ingredient that helps fight bacteria that are at the root cause of many common oral care problems. Some of the benefits of this active ingredient as it relates to some of these common oral care conditions are:

Plaque/Bacteria: Stannous ions kill bacteria and inhibit bacteria growth

Gingivitis: Stannous fluoride is an antibacterial which kills plaque bacteria that can cause gum inflammation and gum bleeding

Sensitivity: Stannous fluoride forms deposits on exposed dental surfaces to help reduce sensitivity

Enamel Strengthening: Stannous fluoride deposits on the tooth surface, fortifying the enamel against acid attacks

Stain Removal & Prevention: Stannous fluoride does not specifically provide stain removal/prevention. However the full formula is developed to provide these benefits through Polyphosphates that protect from building up new stains and an abrasive system that gently removes surface stains without harming the enamel.
